The Seminar
    An examination of selected topics in the history of art.

Meeting Place and Time

  • Pannell 015: Wednesdays 2:30-4:20 p.m.
Student Responsibilities

  • Active Participation in Seminar Discussion
  • TWO Reports selected from the topics listed in the schedule. Each report will take the form of an online webpage posted on your own website (through Lazlo).
    • First Report
      1. Select one of the areas in the section Modernism & Postmodernism.
      2. Select TWO scholarly articles or book chapters that address the topic selected. One article or chapter should discuss an example of "Progessive Modernism" and the other "Conservative Modernism."
      3. On a website provide in essay form (length equivalent to at least 8 to 10 pages):
        • an introduction to the topic selected
        • an overview of the various issues and questions surrounding it
        • an analysis and discussion of each article or book chapter selected
        • a selection of pertinent images
        • a selection of points for discussion in the seminar
        • be prepared to discuss the author's sources and approach
      4. PLEASE NOTE
        • A hard copy (or computer access to a printable copy) of the selected articles or book chapters must be provided for each member of the seminar the week before your presentation.
        • A draft of the website essay must be ready for review by Professors Witcombe and Hamilton the week before your presentation. Please email the URL of your website to Professors Witcombe witcombe@sbc.edu and Hamilton thamilton@sbc.edu.

    • Second Report
      1. Select one of the areas in the section Contemporary Art and Visual Culture.
      2. Select a series of pertinent images from contemporary visual culture pertaining to your selected topic.
      3. Select and provide for the seminar an article pertinent to the topic selected.
      4. Prepare and present an oral report to the seminar in which you:
        • discuss the selected article.
        • identify, analyse and discuss the selected images in terms progressive/conservative modernism and postmodernism.
      5. On a website:
        • Provide properly identified images together with commentary and observations on each one.
        • Links to other pertinent materials (books, articles, websites, videos, etc).

    Grading

    • Participation in Discussion = 15%
    • First Report = 45%
    • Second Report = 40%
